In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of creating a YouTube channel from start to finish. Whether you want to become a content creator, promote your business or simply share your passion with the world, you can have your channel set up and ready to publish your first video in just a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s the difference between a YouTube account and a YouTube channel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Anyone with a Google Account automatically has access to YouTube. This is your viewer account<\/strong>, which allows you to watch videos, subscribe to channels, leave comments and create playlists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a viewer account doesn’t allow you to upload videos. To publish content, you’ll first need to create your own YouTube channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A YouTube channel gives you access to YouTube Studio<\/strong>, where you can upload videos, create Shorts, livestream, manage your content, build a subscriber base and customise your public profile. Your channel is linked to your Google Account, so there’s no need to create a separate login.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this guide, we’ll create a fictional channel called Mylife4U<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Set up a google account<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you don’t already have one, the first step is to create a Google Account. As Google owns YouTube, the two platforms are closely connected. If you already have a Google Account, you can skip ahead to Step 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Go to google.com<\/strong> <\/a>and select Create account<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    2. Enter your basic information and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Next, you’ll be asked to create your Gmail address. As Gmail is the world’s most popular email service, many email addresses are already taken, so you may need to try a few variations before finding one that’s available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Once you’ve chosen an available address, click Next<\/strong> and create a strong password using a combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Before your account can be created, Google will ask you to verify your identity. The exact method may vary, but you’ll usually be asked to verify using your mobile phone by entering a code or following the on-screen instructions. For example when setting up this account in the UK I was asked to use this QR code and follow the verification process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Next, you’ll be prompted to add a recovery email address. This is highly recommended, as it can help you regain access to your account if you ever forget your password or lose access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Finally, you’ll be asked to review a few account settings, agree to Google’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and choose your cookie preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Once you’ve completed these steps, your Google Account is ready to use. Clicking your profile icon in the top-right corner should display the following menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 2: Creating your YouTube channel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Now it’s time to create your YouTube channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Make sure you’re signed into your Google Account. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner (it will usually display your initials), then select Create a channel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You’ll now be asked to name your channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For this example I have entered Mylife4U<\/strong> into the Channel Name field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Your channel name doesn’t have to be unique, although choosing something distinctive will help people find you more easily. Your channel handle<\/strong>, however, must be unique. YouTube will automatically suggest one, but you’re free to edit it. If your chosen handle isn’t available, simply keep trying alternatives until you find one that is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Next, it’s time to choose your profile picture (also known as your avatar).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Click Select a picture<\/strong>. You’ll have the option of choosing one of YouTube’s built-in illustrations or uploading your own image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For a more personal and professional look, we recommend uploading your own image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Click From computer<\/strong>, then either browse for your image or drag it into the upload window. Once uploaded, you can crop and rotate it before clicking Done<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Remember that your profile picture is displayed inside a circle, so make sure important parts of your image aren’t cropped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You’ll now see a preview of how your channel will appear. If everything looks good, click Create channel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Before uploading your first video, it’s worth spending a few minutes customising your channel to give visitors a great first impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 3: Customising your channel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    From your new channel homepage, click Customise channel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You’ll be taken to your channel dashboard. Click Customise<\/strong> to begin editing your channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You’ll now see a range of customisation options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Add a channel banner<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    The first and arguably most important option is your channel banner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Click Change<\/strong> to upload one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Your banner should be at least 2048 \u00d7 1152 pixels<\/strong> and no larger than 6 MB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is one of the first things visitors will see, so choose an image that reflects your brand and the type of content you plan to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
