A content creators guide

Creators are often advised to find their niche when creating content and building a channel, but exactly how specific should you really be? Will narrowing your focus too much actually hold your content back or help it to flourish?

Producing highly niche content

The advantages

So let’s first set out the clear advantages of making highly niche content. The first is that you are likely to know exactly who you are trying to reach. This gives you a distinct advantage when it comes to building a community, as you can create content specifically for a group of like-minded people with a shared interest. By providing valuable specialist insight, you can also establish yourself as an authority on your chosen subject. If your content consistently demonstrates genuine knowledge, viewers interested in that subject have a reason to return whenever they need further advice or inspiration.

Another major advantage is that niche subjects are likely to have less competition. Take “music production” as an example. This is an enormous subject covered by countless creators, meaning you are competing for attention with established producers and potentially millions of pieces of content. Narrow that down to EDM production and the field becomes smaller. Trance production narrows it further, while Psytrance tutorials target an even more specific audience with fewer options available to them. While the potential audience gets smaller at each stage, your chances of reaching people genuinely interested in what you are offering increase.

Being niche doesn’t just apply to educational or informational content, either. You could create a highly specific form of entertainment and become the creator associated with it. Rather than being just another impressionist, for example, perhaps you specialise in one truly great impression that is performed in various comedic scenarios. Your niche effectively becomes part of your identity, making it easier for people to remember you and understand what you offer.

And this is perhaps the biggest benefit. When someone discovers highly targeted content that provides exactly the information or entertainment they are looking for, they are more likely to be genuinely invested in it. You may attract fewer viewers than a creator making broadly appealing content, but those viewers are likely to be far more engaged, as well as more likely to return and become part of your community.

The disadvantages

Other than naturally limiting your potential audience there are some other disadvantages to going too niche. You may find that your niche audience is just too small to sustain and allow channel growth.

If your niche is too specific, it may also make it harder to find enough fresh ideas. Make sure there are enough angles to cover so you don’t risk repeatedly covering the same ground or having to stretch your subject beyond what genuinely interests you.

A highly specialised channel can also make it harder to change direction later. If your interests or skills evolve, your existing audience may not necessarily follow you into a completely different subject. It’s a little like the recording artist who suddenly changes musical direction for their 4th album. As a result, they end up alienating and disappointing the fan base they have worked hard to build. Any such change in direction or focus should therefore be done slowly and with your audience’s opinions taken into consideration.

Producing broader content

The advantages

Producing content around broader subjects brings its own advantages. Most obviously, there is a much larger potential audience. While you will also face considerably more competition, there can be huge numbers of potential viewers available. And when someone is searching for something less specific, they may be more willing to browse and scroll for inspiration rather than looking for one particular answer. A video offering general photography tips, for example, has far more potential viewers than one specifically about maintaining a vintage film camera.

A broader subject can also give you greater creative freedom. You can cover a wider range of topics and techniques, respond to trends, experiment with different formats and follow your interests as they develop. This flexibility can be particularly useful if you don’t yet have deep knowledge or a strong passion for one specific subject. You can keep your content broad while still developing a recognisable channel identity.

You might begin by making tutorials or reviews, for example, only to discover that your audience responds more strongly to discussions, opinions or content about the wider industry. Broad content gives you more room to experiment and evolve without necessarily taking your channel in a completely different direction. The trade-off is that, with so much competition, you will need to develop a distinctive voice, style or approach that gives viewers a reason to choose your content over the many alternatives.

The disadvantages

The main challenge with creating broader content is finding and retaining your audience. As well as competing with far more creators for attention, there can be less of a reason for viewers to subscribe. Someone might enjoy one video but have little interest in the next if you regularly move between unrelated topics. They may also already follow several established channels covering similar ground.

To overcome this, you need to think carefully about how you can present familiar information in a way that feels different. When your subject isn’t particularly niche, your approach can become your niche. Your personality, presentation style, perspective, expertise or the way you format your content can give viewers a reason to choose your channel over the many alternatives.

How does the algorithm treat niche content?

It is often assumed that platforms such as YouTube favour content with the broadest possible appeal. In reality, recommendation systems are primarily concerned with matching viewers to content they are likely to watch. And YouTube is an expert on people’s viewing habits.

This can give niche content an advantage if there is a clearly defined audience. Your video may appear as a recommendation if a viewer regularly watches videos related to your niche. Specific search terms in your title and description can also help it appear when someone is looking for a particular subject. As an example, if fewer creators are covering a specific production technique, your video should have a better chance of appearing in relevant searches than a broader tutorial.

SEO works in much the same way. Broad keywords can have enormous search volumes, but they also naturally face greater competition. More specific searches may attract fewer viewers, but your content has a better chance of matching their exact intent.

The challenge is finding the sweet spot: a subject with enough people interested in it to support your content, but not so much competition that your videos struggle to be seen.

The expanding from niche to broader territory strategy

Starting with a relatively specific subject and then gradually broadening your subject matter can be a sensible strategy. It gives you an opportunity to first target a clearly defined audience around something you understand well. As already highlighted, focusing on highly niche subjects can help you get noticed, albeit by a much more limited audience. If, however, those initial videos attract healthy levels of engagement and generate early subscriptions, this provides a useful indication to YouTube that your content is of value.

Once you have established your channel in this way, you can proceed to expand your subject matter slowly. This may actually happen naturally as you begin to exhaust the most obvious topics within your specific niche. The important thing is to avoid a sudden U-turn. If people have subscribed because they enjoy your specialist content, abruptly abandoning it for something much broader could leave them with less reason to keep watching.

Instead, create a balance between your established niche and broader subjects that still connect to it. If you make content about a particular area of music production, for example, you might gradually introduce videos covering wider production techniques while continuing to produce content that your original audience came for.

This is also a good opportunity to experiment with different formats. Tutorials could be joined by reviews, opinions, interviews, challenges or behind-the-scenes content. Not everything will work, but that is the point of experimenting.

Most importantly, pay attention to what happens. Your analytics can show which subjects and formats attract clicks, hold attention and turn viewers into subscribers. Use these results to inform your next decisions rather than simply assuming you know what your audience wants. Over time, this allows your channel to broaden based on evidence while retaining the audience and identity that helped it get started.

First and foremost, make the content YOU want to make.

While this post has explored the advantages and disadvantages of different levels of niche, your first consideration should always be to create content that genuinely interests you. Rather than trying to second-guess or exploit the way YouTube works, focus on making the videos you actually want to make.

If you aren’t genuinely passionate about your subject, producing dozens or even hundreds of pieces of content about it can quickly become a chore. Passion and knowledge are difficult to fake. They come through in your enthusiasm, the way you explain things and the depth of information you can offer.

So rather than asking “How can I tap into an audience?”, ask yourself: “Could I happily make 50 videos about this?” This keeps your motivations genuine while giving you the insight to make the most of the niche you have chosen.

Stop risking your channel’s revenue and momentum on a flawed system.

RouteNote Licensing guarantees that the music you license is protected from Content ID claims, allowing you to focus on what you do best: creating great content.

Click Here to Start Your Claim-Safe Journey Today!

Creators are often advised to find their niche when creating content and building a channel, but exactly how specific should you really be?
