You added it to your video. Then YouTube flagged the music.

That does not automatically mean you chose the wrong track.

A royalty-free licence gives you permission under particular terms. Content ID checks for matching content. Those are different things, so your next step is to check the claim against the permission you actually have.

What Content ID checks

YouTube explains that its Content ID system can identify a match between an upload and reference content. Depending on the rights holder’s settings, a claim can affect availability, monetisation or tracking.

The system detecting a recording is not the same as someone reviewing your licence paperwork.

Start by identifying the claimed section. Is it the background track you downloaded, a song captured during filming, or another piece of audio entirely?

A café radio playing behind your interview can complicate a video even when your chosen background music is licensed.

Royalty free still comes with terms

“Royalty free” describes a licensing arrangement. It does not mean every recording is available for every purpose.

Check your actual licence against the video you made:

Which account obtained the track?

Does the permission cover this type of content?

Are commercial or client uses included where needed?

Is attribution required?

Are there channel registration or project identification requirements?

Do not assume that a receipt alone answers all of those questions. Keep the terms alongside it.

The useful question is whether your specific use is covered.

A claim and a strike are different

A Content ID claim is not itself a copyright strike. YouTube says strikes result from valid copyright removal requests.

That distinction matters when deciding what to do next. Read the notice carefully instead of treating every copyright notification as the same event.

Check the claimant, the matched timestamps and the effect on your video. Take a screenshot or save the details before changing anything.

Build a small evidence folder

Create one folder for each project and keep:

The track title and artist.

The original source link.

The download date.

Your licence or other permission record.

Any required attribution.

The video URL and claim details.

Use a clear filename such as “product-demo-music-licence”. Future you should be able to find it without searching six email accounts.

If you work for clients, agree who stores these records and who handles claims. That conversation is easier before delivery.

Choose your next step

Contact your music provider with the video URL, claimed track and supporting records. They may have a specific process for investigating the match.

YouTube provides a dispute process for claims when you have a valid basis, such as the necessary rights. Its guidance also makes clear that crediting the owner or buying a copy of a song does not, by itself, justify a dispute.

If you cannot confirm permission, review your options for replacing or removing the music. Keep a copy of your edit before making changes.

Read YouTube’s dispute guidance before using the dispute process.

Make the next upload easier

Add a music check to your export routine: verify the track, check the intended use, include any required credit and save the permission record.

A clean project folder will not prevent every match. It does make the situation easier to investigate.

Looking for music for your next video?
