The best music is usually brief, recognisable and easy to mix under speech. Your outro can reuse the same theme, or use a quieter variation to help the episode wind down.

Start with the feeling of the show

Think about the first few seconds of an episode. Is the show relaxed and conversational, investigative, funny or high-energy? Choose a track that supports that feeling instead of trying to explain the whole podcast in sound.

A long, dramatic intro can work for a narrative series. A weekly advice show may benefit from a short cue that gets out of the way. If the podcast covers different subjects, pick a theme broad enough to suit the whole series rather than one episode.

Keep the cue short

You don’t need a full song. A short section with a clear beginning or a natural fade is often easier to reuse. Listen for a distinctive moment that still works when cropped. If the track only makes sense after a long build, it may be difficult to use consistently.

Make a few versions for your editing workflow: a full intro, a shorter transition and an ending. Keep the music consistent across episodes so regular listeners recognise it.

Mix for speech

The host’s voice is the main event. If the music masks words, lower it or choose a less busy section. Tracks with dense percussion, bright high frequencies or a strong melody can compete with consonants and make speech harder to follow.

Listen on headphones, laptop speakers and a phone. A mix that sounds balanced on studio monitors may feel very different on a small speaker. Check the intro at normal listening volume, not just while editing.

Plan the outro

An outro can use the same theme as the intro, but it should leave space for the host to thank listeners, mention the next episode or give a call to action. A short musical tail after the final words can create a clean ending without stretching the segment.

If you publish short social clips as well as full episodes, decide whether those clips need a separate edit. Don’t assume one licence automatically covers every platform or use; check the current terms for your project.

Check the licence and keep a record

Before publishing, confirm that the licence covers your intended use, including any monetisation, client work, ads or promotional edits. Save the track name, licence information and the episode or series it was used in. That makes it easier to answer questions later or recreate the audio package.

A licensing library can help you find music by mood and style. RouteNote Licensing’s current plan details and terms should be checked on its official pages before choosing a track for a podcast.

How to Choose Music for a Podcast Intro and Outro A podcast intro needs to do a small job quickly: tell listeners what kind of show they’ve started, then make space for the host.
