That is why moving the mic can make dialogue clearer even when you keep the same microphone. Shure’s technical note on critical distance explains that, in a room, there is a point where direct speech and reflected speech are equal in intensity; for intelligible speech in a noisy room, it recommends silencing the noise source or bringing the microphone closer. Shure: Critical Distance and Microphone Placement

Try this before buying another mic

Record the same sentence twice: once with the microphone in its current position, then again closer to the speaker. Keep the microphone aimed consistently and compare the playback on headphones. Listen for clearer consonants, less room echo and less background sound. If the closer take is cleaner, you have found a practical improvement without changing equipment.

The right distance depends on the microphone and the speaker. A lavalier may sit a short distance from the mouth; a boom mic can be held just outside the frame; a desk mic may need to be raised and angled toward the speaker. A mic too close can capture plosives, breath noise or unwanted bass emphasis, so adjust it gradually and test.

Improve the room as well

Turn off or move away from fans and noisy devices where possible. Soft furnishings can reduce some reflections, but they do not replace good mic placement. If you are recording a lesson, interview or livestream, check the room and the microphone position before going live. A short test recording lets you catch problems before they reach the audience.

After the dialogue is clear, use ambience, music and SFX with restraint so they support rather than compete with the voice. If you use licensed audio, check the current license agreement and platform rules for your project.

Moving a microphone closer to the person speaking usually increases the direct voice compared with room reflections and background noise.
