For ASMR, the most useful background sound may be no music at all. Begin with clean, controlled recording, then add only the ambience or music that supports the experience without masking the small sounds viewers came to hear.

Keep the main sound in front

ASMR videos often depend on detail: a soft tap, page turn, whisper or brush against a surface. If a background layer competes with those sounds, it can weaken the whole video.

Before choosing music, listen to a rough cut at a comfortable volume. Ask: does the recording already feel calm and complete? If it does, leave it alone. Added sound is a creative option, not a requirement.

Record a quiet, consistent background

Room tone is the low-level sound of the space where you record. Capture a short section of the room before filming, with the same equipment and settings. You can use it to smooth edits where the background suddenly changes.

Turn off avoidable noise sources, such as fans or notification sounds, if it is practical. Keep the microphone distance consistent. Small changes in distance can alter the balance between a whisper, a tap and the room.

When music or ambience can help

A soft musical layer can work in a guided relaxation video, an intro or an outro. Gentle ambience may help establish a scene in a roleplay-style ASMR video. For a close-up tapping or whispering session, music may simply get in the way.
