The 1,024-level fact explained

10-bit video can represent 1,024 values for each colour channel, compared with 256 values per channel in 8-bit video. That extra precision can give editors finer gradations to work with when adjusting colour, especially in skies, shadows and smooth gradients. It does not automatically make a shot look better, and it is not the same thing as dynamic range.

Canon’s professional video glossary gives the comparison: 8-bit provides 256 possible shades per channel, while 10-bit provides 1,024. The arithmetic is straightforward: each bit doubles the number of possible values, so 10-bit has four times as many per channel as 8-bit.

Why extra colour values can help in an edit

Imagine filming a clean blue sky, then pushing the contrast and saturation during grading. If the original footage and the rest of the editing chain have limited tonal steps, a smooth gradient may break into visible bands. More recorded values give colour adjustments more steps to work with, which can help preserve smoother transitions.

That is a potential advantage, not a guarantee. Lens, sensor, exposure, picture profile, compression, software settings and final export all affect the result. A well-exposed 8-bit clip may look better than poorly exposed 10-bit footage.

10-bit is not the same as 10 stops of dynamic range

Bit depth describes how finely the signal’s values are divided. Dynamic range describes the span from the darkest usable detail to the brightest usable detail. They are related parts of image capture, but the number “10-bit” does not mean ten stops, nor does it by itself prove that a camera captures more highlight or shadow range.

It also does not mean the final video will show 1,024 visibly distinct shades in every scene. The file’s transfer curve, colour format, compression and display all affect how those values are used and seen.

When should a creator choose 10-bit?

10-bit capture can be useful when you expect substantial colour correction, need smooth gradients, are working in an HDR workflow or want more flexibility in post. For a simple, well-lit talking-head clip with minimal grading, it may not change the final result enough to justify larger files or more demanding editing.

Before recording, check three points:

Camera mode: Does the selected resolution and frame rate support 10-bit recording?

Editing pipeline: Can your project settings and editor preserve the source precision?

Delivery format: Does the platform or client need an HDR or 10-bit master, or will a standard web export be enough?

If you are comparing camera specifications, check the manual for the exact codec, frame rate and chroma settings; “10-bit” alone does not describe the whole recording format.

10-bit video can represent 1,024 values for each colour channel, compared with 256 values per channel in 8-bit video.
