Many sensors scan through the image in sequence rather than capturing every pixel at one instant. If the camera or subject moves during that readout, straight objects can appear tilted, or fast movement can look wobbly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ARRI explains that rolling-shutter readout scans from one part of the sensor to another; the scan duration affects how visible the artifact is. Sony\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.com\/en\/SonyInfo\/technology\/publications\/6.5-a-25.2-mpixel-120-frames-s-full-frame-global-shutter-cmos-image-sensor-with-pixel-parallel-adc\/\">technical description of global-shutter sensors<\/a> also identifies moving-object distortion as a limitation of rolling-shutter sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What rolling shutter looks like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most familiar example is a fast pan past a row of buildings: vertical edges may lean in the direction of movement. A propeller or spinning wheel can appear bent or oddly curved. Handheld motion may produce the \u201cjello\u201d look, where the frame seems to wobble even though the camera is moving smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effect is not caused simply by \u201cbad stabilisation.\u201d Stabilisation can reduce shake, but it cannot make sequential sensor readout happen all at once. Nor is rolling shutter identical to motion blur: blur comes from movement during an exposure, while rolling-shutter skew comes from different rows being recorded at different moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to reduce rolling-shutter distortion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Move the camera more slowly.<\/strong> A gentle pan gives the sensor less change to record between the top and bottom of the frame.<\/li><li><strong>Keep the camera steady when the scene moves quickly.<\/strong> A locked-off shot can avoid adding camera movement to action in the frame.<\/li><li><strong>Check readout modes in the camera manual.<\/strong> Some cameras offer different readout speeds or recording modes; the exact options vary by model and may involve trade-offs in resolution or quality.<\/li><li><strong>Test before an important take.<\/strong> Record a quick pan across a vertical edge, then inspect it at full size on the computer.<\/li><li><strong>Consider global-shutter hardware if fast motion is central to your work.<\/strong> A global shutter captures the frame at once and can avoid this type of skew, but verify the specific camera\u2019s capabilities and trade-offs before buying.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing shutter speed can alter motion blur, but it does not by itself remove rolling-shutter skew. If you already have affected footage, check your editor\u2019s documentation for any rolling-shutter correction tools and test them on a copy; repair results vary with the shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For travel clips, product shots and action footage, a few seconds of camera test can save an unusable take.
