Start with clean dialogue, add one continuous sense of place, then use a small number of effects to explain movement, action and emotional change.

The goal is not to fill every second. It is to give the listener just enough information to build the scene in their head.

Start with the story, not the sound library

Before searching for effects, break the scene into beats. For each beat, write down four things:

Where are we?

What changes?

What must the listener understand?

What should the listener feel?

Imagine a character entering a closed café after dark. The important beats might be: the door opens, the outside world falls away, the room feels empty, a machine hum reveals that somebody was recently there, and a dropped spoon startles the character.

That list is more useful than “add café sounds”. It tells you which sounds carry story information and which are optional decoration.

Build the location with one stable ambience

Ambience is the continuous layer that tells the listener where the scene exists. It might be light traffic outside a flat, ventilation in an office, insects in a field or distant voices in a station.

Choose one main ambience first. Keep it steady under the dialogue and make changes only when the story changes location or perspective. If you stack rain, wind, traffic, birds, room tone and crowd noise at similar levels, the scene becomes tiring and dialogue loses focus.

A useful rule is to ask whether removing a layer makes the location less clear. If it does not, that layer may not be necessary.

Look for ambience that matches the acoustic perspective of the scene. A distant city wash is different from traffic recorded at the kerb. A small tiled room should not sound like a large railway hall.

Add actions the listener needs to follow

Spot effects explain a particular event: a latch clicks, keys land on a table, shoes cross a wooden floor or a message arrives on a phone.

Prioritise effects that answer a story question. If a character says, “I’ll put the letter here,” paper movement may help. If the script and performance already make the action obvious, another effect may simply repeat information.

For complicated action, work from large to small:

Place the main event.

Add the movement that leads into it.

Add a reaction or consequence only if it matters.

Remove anything that masks a word or confuses the sequence.

A single well-timed glass break will usually be clearer than five overlapping crash sounds.

Use perspective to make the scene three-dimensional

The same sound should change when its source moves.

A car passing outside a room should be quieter and duller than a car beside the listener. Footsteps approaching a microphone should grow in level and presence. A voice heard through a wall should lose clarity rather than simply become quieter.

You can create perspective with level, panning and careful equalisation, but begin with the right recording. An effect captured at the correct distance often sounds more convincing than a close recording processed heavily.

Keep headphone listeners in mind. Extreme left-right movement can feel distracting, so use width to support the story rather than demonstrate the mix.

Let transitions carry time and place

Audio drama often moves between locations without a picture. A short transition can make the change feel deliberate.

You might use:

a door closing in one scene and opening in the next;

a brief music cue between chapters;

an ambience that begins before the dialogue changes;

one recognisable sound linked to a recurring location.

Try beginning the next ambience just before the previous scene ends. This audio lead gives the listener a moment to anticipate the new place.

Use music for structure, not wallpaper

Music can open an episode, mark a turning point, connect a montage or let the listener sit with an emotional consequence. It does not need to run underneath every exchange.

If music sits under dialogue, choose a track with space in the frequency range occupied by speech. Dense melodies, prominent vocals and constant cymbals can compete with performances even at a low volume.

Place a temporary cue, listen with your eyes closed and ask whether the scene becomes clearer or merely more emotional. If it pushes the listener towards the wrong interpretation, try a more restrained track—or no music.

Mix from dialogue outwards

Dialogue is usually the reference point. Set it first, then bring in ambience until the room becomes believable. Add spot effects only as high as they need to be understood. Finally, introduce music and automate it around important words.

Check the episode:

on headphones;

through ordinary laptop or phone speakers;

at a low listening level;

with the screen turned away;

after a short break from the mix.

If the plot becomes hard to follow on a small speaker, simplify the scene before making everything louder.

Keep a repeatable scene template

For a recurring production, create tracks or folders for dialogue, room tone, ambience, movement, spot effects, transitions and music. Name files by scene and action rather than keeping download names.

Save the licence record alongside the project assets. RouteNote Licensing’s current FAQ explains its download and claim process, but always check the current terms that apply to your plan and production. This article is practical production guidance, not legal advice.

The best sound-designed scene does not advertise every layer. It gives the listener a place, directs attention and then gets out of the performance’s way.

How to Design Sound for an Audio Drama Podcast Good audio-drama sound design makes a scene easy to imagine without asking the listener to decode every noise.
