The full-quality original stays in the project; the editing software switches back to it for the final render. Adobe describes proxies as a way to work with large or resource-intensive media more smoothly in its Premiere proxy workflow guide.

Proxies are useful when high-resolution footage stutters during playback, takes a long time to scrub, or makes a laptop’s fans work hard. They do not improve the camera original or make the final video higher quality. They are temporary editing companions.

What a proxy file does

A proxy carries the picture and timing information needed to edit, but usually uses less data than the camera original. That can make previewing and moving through a timeline easier. The actual result depends on the proxy settings, the computer, the footage and the editing application.

You may not need proxies for every project. If your clips play smoothly and your editor responds well, generating extra files adds storage and management steps without solving a problem.

A proxy workflow

Import your originals, then use your editor’s proxy command or ingest option to create the linked files. Keep the proxy media in a clearly named folder, ideally beside the project or in a predictable media directory. Some applications let you toggle proxy playback; Adobe’s help page explains the controls for Premiere.

Before you begin a long edit, test a few clips. Check that audio remains in sync, the picture orientation is correct and your editor can switch between proxy and original. If you move the project to another computer, copy the project and media together or follow the software’s relinking instructions.

Before you export

Confirm that the editor is using the original media for the final render. Most proxy workflows are designed to switch back automatically, but verify the setting and inspect a short export before delivering a large project. Check resolution, frame rate, colour settings and audio as well.

A proxy workflow can make editing more comfortable, but it does not replace a backup of original footage. Keep the camera files safe and organised. If the edit includes music or sound effects, keep those source files and licence records with the project so they remain easy to locate.

Stop risking your channel’s revenue and momentum on a flawed system.

RouteNote Licensing guarantees that the music you license is protected from Content ID claims, allowing you to focus on what you do best: creating great content.

Click Here to Start Your Claim-Safe Journey Today!

A video proxy is a smaller, lower-resolution copy of an original video clip that an editor can use while cutting a project.
