Choose where the audience is hearing from before layering drops, wind and thunder.

Rain outside a window should not automatically sound like standing in an open car park.

Define the viewpoint

Write one sentence describing the position:

outside beneath an umbrella;

inside beside a closed window;

under a metal shelter;

in a car with rain on the roof;

beside an open doorway.

The location determines which details should be prominent. An umbrella gives close drops overhead. A room may contain window impacts and a subdued exterior bed. A car adds roof and glass textures.

If the camera moves, decide whether the sound follows it or stays attached to a character’s experience.

Choose one foundation

Begin with a continuous recording that matches the intensity and setting: light rain, heavy rainfall, steady street rain or a storm.

Listen for unwanted details. A passing car, bird or recognisable voice may repeat if you loop the recording. A dramatic thunderclap can become an accidental story event.

Do not start by stacking three full rain recordings. Their combined texture may become broad noise without adding useful information.

Choose a foundation, then ask what is missing.

Add surfaces that exist in the picture

Rain becomes specific when it hits something.

Useful details include:

drops against glass;

water on leaves;

splashes in shallow puddles;

a gutter or drain;

roof impacts;

footsteps on wet ground;

clothing and umbrella movement.

Select the details the audience can see or reasonably infer. If the image contains a quiet garden, a loud metal roof pattern may create the wrong space.

A few foreground events can provide scale without making every drop audible.

Build an exterior-to-interior transition

Try this original 25-second exercise.

The scene begins outside as a person approaches a doorway. Use the full weather bed, wet footsteps and one clothing movement.

As the door opens, introduce a little interior room sound. When the person crosses the threshold, reduce direct rain and emphasise the doorway or window perspective. Let the door close with an appropriately sized effect.

After closure, keep some exterior rain audible if the room and window would plausibly transmit it. Do not replace everything with absolute silence.

The transition should explain the change of shelter without requiring narration.

Keep thunder purposeful

Thunder can imply weather intensity, distance and a coming change. It can also become a cheap punctuation mark.

If lightning is visible, think about the relationship between flash and sound. Avoid making a supposedly distant flash produce an immediate, close impact without a deliberate stylistic reason.

For a scene without visible lightning, use thunder sparingly. Repeating a dramatic clap at regular intervals reveals the construction and can distract from dialogue.

If the story is gentle, you may not need thunder at all.

Protect dialogue without losing the weather

Rain is often broad and continuous, so it can mask speech. Start with the weather at a believable but restrained level. Raise only the foreground details the scene needs.

During key lines, reduce competing detail and use level automation. Avoid making the whole storm vanish with every sentence; that can be more distracting than a slightly quieter bed throughout.

If you need tonal changes, compare them with the original. Excessive filtering can make rain sound like an unrelated hiss.

A library recording should blend with the production sound, not fight it.

Match edits across shots

A cut from wide to close does not always require a completely different bed. Keep the underlying weather stable and change only the perspective details.

Check intensity across the scene. A light shower should not become a downpour for one reverse angle unless the story or time shift explains it.

Watch for repeated events at cut points. A recognisable drip every four seconds can reveal a short loop. Use longer clean sections, offset details and gentle crossfades where appropriate.

Choose realistic or stylised treatment deliberately

For a naturalistic documentary, preserve the recorded environment and avoid implying events that did not occur. For fiction or animation, stylised rain can support mood and pace.

The important decision is consistency. A realistic room bed and enormous fantasy thunder may belong together in a heightened scene, but they should be chosen intentionally.

Keep reconstruction and factual reporting clearly distinguished when the audience could otherwise mistake designed sound for authentic evidence.

Source and record assets

The RouteNote SFX catalogue can supply weather beds and details. Check each selected asset’s current licence, including modification and intended project use.

Keep the original files and source records. Label edited versions by scene and perspective, such as “rain-window-interior”, rather than a vague “rain-final”.

Rain-scene checklist

Listening viewpoint is clear.

One weather bed establishes intensity.

Surface details fit the visible space.

Shelter transitions have a believable progression.

Thunder serves the scene.

Dialogue remains clear without weather pumping.

Loops and continuity have been checked.

Asset permissions and edits are recorded.

Start with one rain bed and two relevant details. Add more only when the scene becomes clearer.

A believable rain scene needs a consistent weather bed, a few surface details and a clear listening viewpoint.
