Non-diegetic music functions as score for the audience. Use the distinction to decide where the music comes from, whose experience it represents and how it changes through a scene.

Both uses still require appropriate music permission.

Ask who can hear the music

Start with three questions:

Is there a source inside the scene?

Could the characters hear it?

Is the audience hearing a physical source, an emotional score or a deliberate blend?

A radio playing in a café is a clear source. Music accompanying a montage without an in-world source is usually score.

The distinction describes narrative function. It does not depend only on whether the music sounds small or full. A radio source can be presented prominently, while a score can be extremely quiet.

For a shorter explanation, see the existing diegetic and non-diegetic definition guide.

Choose the role before adding processing

It is tempting to import a track and add a “radio” effect because the image contains a radio. First decide what the viewer should understand.

Is the song incidental atmosphere? Does a character choose it? Does it reveal personality? Is it a cue that changes the scene?

The answer determines prominence. Incidental music may remain behind dialogue. A character deliberately turning up a song can justify a change in level and perspective.

Processing should communicate that role, not become a trick in search of a purpose.

Work through a café example

Imagine an original scene: two friends meet in a small café. A radio plays behind the counter. One friend receives good news, and the scene moves into a short celebratory montage.

Begin with the music apparently coming from the counter. Keep it at a plausible level and shape its tone to fit the speaker and room.

When the news lands, allow the conversation to finish. Then broaden the music as the montage begins. The same track can move from an in-world source towards a fuller score.

The audience understands the emotional continuity because the musical identity remains stable while its presentation changes.

Make the source perspective believable

Consider distance, room reflections and speaker character.

A small radio may have limited low bass and high-frequency detail. A large venue system can sound broader. A source behind a closed door may be subdued and filtered.

Use moderate EQ, level and reverberation changes. Avoid assuming every source needs the same extreme band-pass filter.

Compare the music with production dialogue and room sound. If the room is dry but the radio has a vast concert-hall tail, the source may feel detached.

Also consider position. A moving camera does not always require dramatic panning; the narrative listening perspective can remain stable.

Plan the transition into score

Mark the moment when the music’s role changes.

You might:

gradually open its frequency range;

reduce the apparent room response;

widen the presentation;

raise the level after dialogue;

carry a musical phrase across a picture transition.

Change a few parameters deliberately. If everything jumps at once, the transition may feel like a different recording.

Test an alternative with no source-to-score transition. Sometimes the scene works better with a clean break or a new cue. The technique is useful when it supports the story, not as a compulsory sign of sophistication.

Remember the reverse direction

Score can also resolve into an apparent in-world source.

A scene might begin with full music, then reveal a character removing headphones. The sound becomes local and the room takes over.

Plan the reveal so the physical source is plausible. A surprising change can be effective, but careless level and tone shifts may confuse the audience about what they have been hearing.

The visible action should explain the transition.

Avoid double-scoring dialogue

If source music is already audible, a second score may compete with it. Try each alone before combining them.

Ask whether they serve different jobs. A radio may establish location while score represents a character’s internal state. That can work, but the arrangement and mix need space.

For a simple video, one well-chosen cue is often clearer than two simultaneous musical narratives.

Separate storytelling from permission

Music does not become available for use because a character hears it, because it plays from a prop or because the camera captured it on location.

Check the applicable rights for the recording, work and intended production. A personal listening subscription should not be assumed to provide production permission.

This is general information, not legal advice. Use the current licence and appropriate advice for the project.

When using RouteNote Licensing music, confirm the intended use and any permitted processing under the applicable agreement. Keep the track and licence record with the scene.

Scene checklist

The music’s source and audience are clear.

Its role supports the story.

Processing matches the space.

Dialogue remains intelligible.

Source-to-score changes have a planned moment.

A second musical layer has a distinct purpose.

Production permissions are documented.

Try one track in two presentations: as a believable scene source and as a full score. Choose the version—or transition—that makes the story easier to understand.

Diegetic music belongs to the story world: a radio, a performer or a speaker the characters can hear.
