Start by deciding whether the audience hears a diver’s experience, a detached fictional viewpoint or an observational recording.

One muffled filter applied to the entire soundtrack rarely creates a complete scene.

Choose realism or stylisation deliberately

Water is not a silent, uniformly muffled environment. Different recordings and situations contain different activity, equipment and environmental sound.

For an observational project, use authentic recordings and avoid presenting invented sounds as evidence. For fiction, animation or a game, you can build a stylised perspective that communicates movement, danger or wonder.

Make that creative choice before collecting effects. A peaceful exploration and a tense escape may share bubble recordings but need very different structures.

Define the listening position

Write the perspective in plain language:

near a diver’s head;

beneath a boat;

just below a swimming-pool surface;

inside a submerged structure;

a broad underwater landscape;

an imagined creature’s viewpoint.

Decide what moves with the listener. Breathing equipment may remain close in a diver’s perspective while surrounding activity changes.

Avoid putting intimate breathing into a detached wide shot unless the story intentionally remains with that character.

Build the foundation quietly

Choose one environmental bed with enough consistency to support the scene. Listen for repeated events, unwanted machinery or details that imply a different location.

Keep it lower than your first instinct. A dense low-frequency wash can make every scene feel threatening and leave little space for actions.

For a calm sequence, sparse motion and occasional detail may carry more than a continuous cinematic rumble.

Do not add a bubble loop simply because the scene is underwater. Connect bubbles to visible or plausible activity.

Add actions that explain movement

Useful details might include:

bubbles from equipment or an exhalation;

movement near the surface;

an object entering the water;

contact with a structure;

a restrained equipment sound;

water moving around the listener.

Choose the events the story needs. A hand gesture may need no effect. A dropped object might need a short entry, movement and final contact.

RouteNote lists assets such as Diving underwater bubbles. Treat the page description as a way to find a candidate, then listen and check whether its processing fits the scene.

Do not rely on a single low-pass effect

Softening an above-water sound can suggest a subjective change, but filtering cannot supply missing perspective, activity or continuity.

Use tone changes as part of a wider design:

reduce inappropriate surface detail;

introduce a suitable water bed;

keep the important close action;

control relative level and movement;

add only the environmental response the scene needs.

Avoid applying extreme filtering to dialogue, music and effects together without deciding which elements the listener should still understand.

A fictional score may remain full and stable while the scene effects change. Alternatively, music can recede to emphasise immersion. Both need a clear narrative reason.

Plan the surface crossing

Crossing the waterline is often the strongest audio moment.

For a short original exercise, begin beside a pool. Establish ordinary exterior ambience and a few close water movements. At entry, use the visible splash and transition into the underwater bed.

Once submerged, reduce the above-water environment and introduce the chosen close perspective. On resurfacing, reverse the relationship: exterior sound returns, water drains or moves nearby and the underwater bed recedes.

Leave room for the transition to register. Stacking a large impact, riser and musical hit can obscure the useful change of environment.

Control breathing and tension

Repeated close breathing can dominate a scene. Use it only when it belongs to the character and viewpoint.

For tension, vary the story’s information and pacing rather than simply making breathing faster or louder. An unexplained silence, a distant movement or a change in the character’s action may be enough.

Avoid implying that a particular sound is a reliable sign of a medical or diving emergency. Specialist safety content needs qualified review; a dramatic soundtrack is not training guidance.

Mix for ordinary playback

Underwater designs can accumulate low energy that is impressive on full-range monitors and unclear on a phone.

Test whether the important events remain audible without heavy bass. Give bubbles and contact sounds enough useful midrange detail, but avoid harsh peaks.

Listen at a comfortable level on headphones as well. A scene can feel enclosed without constant pressure or overwhelming noise.

Record sources and edits

Keep the original recordings, processed versions and licence records. Check whether the current terms cover the film, game build, client and promotional versions you intend to deliver.

A subscription label on one effect should not be confused with the CC0 label on another. Verify the exact asset.

Underwater-scene checklist

Realistic or stylised treatment is clear.

The listening viewpoint is consistent.

One bed establishes the space.

Bubbles and breathing have a reason.

Filtering supports rather than replaces sound design.

Surface transitions are readable.

Important events survive small-speaker playback.

Asset permissions and processing are documented.

Browse RouteNote sound effects for one suitable foundation, then build the scene through a few specific actions.

An underwater scene needs a clear listening viewpoint, a controlled environmental bed and a few meaningful actions.
