The resulting frame is often taller than 16:9, giving an editor more room to create landscape, square and vertical versions from one shot. Canon and Panasonic describe Open Gate as capture using more of the sensor’s image area. Canon explains the recording mode here.

Why creators use it

Suppose you film an interview once and need a widescreen YouTube version plus a vertical social cut. A taller source frame can leave extra space above and below the subject, so you can reframe for each destination during editing. It can also help when a client has not yet decided which aspect ratio they need.

Open Gate does not automatically make footage sharper or give every camera the same options. Resolution, frame rate, bit depth, codecs, crop behaviour, recording limits and file size vary by model. A camera may offer Open Gate only at selected resolutions or frame rates, so check its manual before a shoot.

When it may not help

If you only deliver 16:9, a standard widescreen mode may be simpler and use less storage. Open Gate can also add work: you need to reframe each deliverable, check that heads and important action remain inside the crop, and edit larger files if the recording mode produces them.

Before relying on it for a client or multi-platform project, record a short test. Mark safe framing for each aspect ratio, export a vertical and horizontal version, and check that both keep the intended composition. Then confirm the camera and editing software preserve the image area you expect. Panasonic’s guide offers another overview.

Need a soundtrack that works across your different cuts?
