Sony describes S-Log as a gamma curve optimised for footage that will be graded. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.com\/electronics\/support\/cameras-camcorders-camcorders-and-video-cameras\/articles\/00145908\">Read Sony\u2019s S-Log guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why record in log?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a scene has bright highlights and deep shadows, log may give a supported camera more room to retain detail across the image. This can help if you plan to adjust contrast and colour to match multiple cameras or create a particular look. The exact result depends on the camera, recording format, exposure and grade; \u201clog\u201d alone does not guarantee more usable dynamic range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Log footage is not a ready-to-publish picture profile. Sony notes that S-Log images require dedicated grading software or an editor with grading tools. Your project needs an appropriate conversion or colour-management workflow, and you should monitor how the footage looks while recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When standard video may be simpler<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need a quick turnaround, do not plan to grade, or are recording a simple one-camera tutorial, a standard profile may be easier. Log footage can show noise more clearly in dark areas, and an unsuitable exposure or missing conversion can leave the final picture washed out.
