During a rack focus, the subject may become sharp while the frame appears to zoom slightly in or out. Nikon describes heavy focus breathing as a distracting pulsing effect in video. Read Nikon’s explanation.

Why it happens

Changing focus adjusts the lens elements, and that can alter the framing. The size of the change depends on the lens design and the focus distances involved. It is separate from a deliberate zoom: the focal length setting has not necessarily changed, but the visible composition can still shift.

Creators may notice it during close-ups, product demonstrations or scenes where focus moves between a foreground and background subject. If the camera is locked off and the edges of the frame move during a pull, breathing may be one reason.

How to check before a shoot

Set up a fixed shot and focus between two objects at different distances. Keep the camera position and zoom setting constant, then look at the frame edges as focus changes. If the shift is distracting, try a different lens or adjust the shot so the change is less visible.

Some camera systems offer breathing compensation, but it may crop the image or be limited to supported lenses and recording modes. Nikon’s camera manual, for example, lists restrictions for its breathing-compensation setting. Check your camera and lens documentation rather than assuming a correction applies universally. See Nikon’s model-specific guide.

Focus breathing is not always a problem. A static talking head may never reveal it, while a deliberate rack focus can make it more obvious. Test the actual lens and shot before a critical take.

When the shot is ready, find music for the edit at RouteNote Licensing.

Focus breathing is a change in a lens’s angle of view as it shifts focus.
