A useful music brief describes what the soundtrack must do in the scene: support an explanation, leave room for a significant sound, build towards a reveal or maintain a stable atmosphere. Include the difficult passage and the required ending, then judge candidates against those needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mood words are a starting point. \u201cUplifting\u201d can describe music with very different arrangements, levels of activity and dramatic timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brief should help a person make a decision even if no automated search tool is involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the brief short enough to use during an edit review. If a requirement cannot be checked against the pictures, rewrite it as a visible or audible decision. Revise the brief when the programme changes rather than adding contradictory instructions indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with the viewer\u2019s task<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Write one sentence explaining what the viewer should understand or experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example: \u201cFollow a maker repairing a small object, with enough space to hear the final mechanism work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That immediately identifies a priority the music must respect. An energetic cue might suit the assembly montage yet obscure the mechanical result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describe the programme before describing the genre. This prevents a familiar musical preference from becoming the whole brief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the task specific enough that two editors could discuss whether the soundtrack supports it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Name the moments that matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mark three or four points in the edit where the music faces a real demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These might be the first spoken sentence, an uncertain result, a change of location and the closing shot. Include their approximate positions in the current version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not make the brief depend on frame-perfect timing before the picture is settled. Use the markers to explain structure, then refine timing when the sequence is ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A candidate should survive the important moments, not simply create an appealing first impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describe activity as well as mood<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Two tracks can feel warm while behaving very differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One might contain a prominent melody and regular fills. Another might leave long spaces between gestures. Under a detailed explanation, that difference can matter more than the shared mood label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describe the amount of musical movement you need. Useful phrases include \u201cstable under speech\u201d, \u201croom for intermittent workshop sound\u201d or \u201ca clear final phrase without a huge build\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are listening criteria. They do not guarantee a catalogue search will return an exact match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Include what must remain audible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Identify narration, dialogue or production sound that carries information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the repair-film example, the moment the mechanism starts may be the proof that the repair worked. Music should not take over that evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell the editor where natural sound should lead and whether the cue can stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep essential information available through the appropriate visual presentation too. A music brief should not quietly make an entire explanation depend on a barely audible detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not specify a fixed music level before hearing the actual recordings together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
