An ND filter works a little like sunglasses for the camera: it reduces incoming light so you can avoid overexposure without necessarily changing other parts of your setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When might you use one?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Imagine filming outdoors on a bright day. You want a particular aperture for depth of field and a consistent shutter setting for the motion in the shot. If the image is too bright, an ND filter can reduce the light while leaving those choices in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some cameras have built-in ND filters. Others use a filter that screws onto the lens or sits in a matte box. Variable ND filters let you adjust the amount of light by turning the filter, but results and usable ranges vary by model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to check before recording<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A strong variable ND setting can create uneven darkening or colour shifts, depending on the filter and lens. Check the image across the whole frame and test the filter at the setting you plan to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
