A sound palette is a small, coherent collection of sonic choices for a production. It describes the character of recurring spaces, objects and transitions so the soundtrack feels related from scene to scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Start with the film\u2019s world and listening viewpoint. Choose a few representative sounds, test them together and record why they belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is different from a spotting sheet. The palette establishes the sound family; the spotting sheet identifies where individual cues are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Try writing one rejection rule as well as a positive reference. For the flat example, it might be: avoid oversized metallic tails on ordinary small props. A useful rejection rule can narrow a search without insisting that every object use exactly the same recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Write a short account of the production\u2019s sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a restrained short film, it might be: \u201cClose, ordinary room details with very little decorative emphasis.\u201d For a stylised animation, the brief may allow exaggerated material and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Include what should remain understated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A useful palette is not simply a list of adjectives such as cinematic or immersive. It should help an editor decide whether a candidate fits the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Keep the description brief enough to consult during a normal library search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Select a few roles that recur across the production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These might include a continuing interior, small handled objects and transitions between locations. You do not need to approve every cue before establishing their general character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For each role, choose one or two representative candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Listen to them together and under the pictures. An attractive ambience and an attractive prop effect can still imply different environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The palette should expose those conflicts early, while replacing a source is still straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Record the role, intended character, representative source and reason for the choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A simple entry might read: \u201cKitchen props: modest contacts, close listening perspective, no oversized ringing tails.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Add a note about any deliberate exception. A single heightened sound can be effective when the ordinary palette is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Keep the actual asset identity and applicable licence record linked separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The record should make selection easier without becoming a rigid rule that prevents the film from changing perspective or emphasis when the story requires it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imagine three scenes in one flat: a conversation, a quiet search and a hurried departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Choose a common room foundation and a compatible family of small prop sounds. Test a cup contact, a drawer and a door movement under their actual scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The search may emphasise detail more strongly, while the conversation leaves those details subdued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The departure may be more active without turning every object into a different material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You now have a related sound world with room for dramatic variation, rather than a collection of individually impressive effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two recordings can describe the same material while suggesting very different listening distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Include perspective in the choice, not only object names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A very close detailed prop sound may not belong with a distant diffuse background unless the scene deliberately shifts attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do not assume that a level adjustment solves every mismatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Review the combination and decide whether another source is a better starting point. Source selection is often easier to understand during revisions than a complicated treatment built around an unsuitable recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A palette should not make the whole film uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark where a change in sound character has a narrative purpose: a subjective moment, a new location or an intentional break in expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Explain the reason for the exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If every scene becomes an exception, reconsider whether the original palette describes the production accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Equally, do not reject a useful scene decision merely because it differs from an early reference. The palette supports the film\u2019s development rather than locking it to the first recordings the team happened to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Music can share space with the palette or intentionally contrast with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Try a representative cue beneath the selected ambience and a few prop actions. Listen for conflicting rhythms, implied locations or an excess of similar detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A track may contain its own noises or effects that become confused with the film\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do not solve every conflict by increasing all the scene sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Try a simpler musical passage, another cue or an unscored moment where appropriate. The palette should support the complete soundtrack rather than operate as a separate exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When a source changes, record what the replacement preserves or improves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A useful note might say that the new drawer has a more suitable travel duration while retaining the modest material character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do not keep every rejected candidate in the active palette. Preserve significant decisions and the sources that are actually in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If another editor joins the project, they should be able to distinguish approved references from exploratory downloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Keep permissions and transfer arrangements clear; a shared creative reference does not automatically permit sharing standalone library assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Watch a representative scene from the beginning, middle and end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do the recurring spaces still feel related? Are exceptions intentional? Does any sound attract attention simply because it belongs to a different recording environment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Check the delivered file outside the editor before treating the palette as complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
