Line level is stronger and is commonly produced by equipment such as mixers, keyboards and other audio devices. If the input setting does not match the source, the recording may be too quiet or overload the input. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.focusrite.com\/hc\/en-gb\/articles\/115004171025-What-are-the-differences-between-mic-line-and-instrument-level\">Focusrite\u2019s guide to mic, line and instrument levels<\/a> explains the distinctions in more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which signal level does your source use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A microphone normally produces a mic-level signal. It is designed to feed a mic input, which includes a preamp. A keyboard, mixer output or other piece of audio equipment may instead provide a line-level signal. That stronger signal belongs in a line input or a combo input switched to line mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connector is a useful clue, but it does not tell the whole story. Some interfaces use a combo socket that accepts an XLR microphone connection and a quarter-inch line connection in the same physical port. Check the input label, settings and device manual rather than assuming that every socket works the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why can the recording sound too quiet?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you connect a microphone to a line input, the interface may not provide the amplification that a mic-level signal needs. You may see a small waveform or need to raise the gain much higher than expected. Check that the cable is connected to the microphone input and that the channel is set to the correct mode. Then speak or perform at the level you will use in the recording and adjust gain while watching the meter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the signal remains low, check the microphone\u2019s connection, power requirements and cable, then consult the equipment manuals. Do not assume that turning up every control is the right fix; a very high gain setting may also raise hiss or room noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why can the recording distort?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A line-level source can be too strong for an input set to mic mode. That can overload the preamp even when the source itself sounds clean. Try the line input setting, lower the source\u2019s output if appropriate, and check the interface meter while playing the loudest section you expect to record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never connect a power amplifier\u2019s speaker output to a mic or line input. Focusrite warns that speaker-level signals can damage equipment designed for lower-level sources. If you are unsure what an output provides, check the manufacturer\u2019s documentation before connecting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A quick input check before recording<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before a podcast, voiceover or video session, identify whether each source is mic level, line level or instrument level. Select the matching input, make a short test recording and listen back through headphones.
