If you want those decisions to be based on reality, you’ll likely need to be looking at colour-accurate monitors, as these provide you with a “source of truth” and will enable you to translate your work well on all display systems.

Regular monitors are lying to you

Most consumer monitors and gaming screens are built with a certain goal in mind: Vibrancy.

When manufacturers aim for a “punchy” look, they will often boost saturation, crank up contrast settings and make the whites cooler, making them slightly blue. This makes Netflix shows look great, but editing on a monitor like this can be an absolute nightmare.

The trap: If the monitor is artificially boosting a certain colour profile in your video, then you will be turning those colours down to compensate in your editing software to make it look “normal”.

The result: When the viewer watches your video on a neutral screen, your decisions will be amplified and look terrible. A pro colour-accurate monitor will give you a “flat” or “neutral” image, so you know the colours you see are the colours actually in the video file.

Colour gamut

Think of a colour gamut as a range of colours a monitor is physically capable of displaying.

Standard monitors: Only cover a select portion of the “sRGB” spectrum. Editing high-quality footage on a limited monitor like this will usually cause the display to clip the colours it can’t show. You might see a flat block of red where there should be five different subtle shades of crimson.

Professional monitors: These are designed to cover as close to 100% of sRGB and a big portion of DCI-P3 (the standard they use in cinema). It allows you to see the steps between colours, eliminating ugly banding effects where there should be smooth gradients.

Consistency across devices

A very common question video editors ask is: “Why does my video look different on my phone than it does on my computer?”

While most screens are different, a colour-accurate monitor is calibrated to match international industry standards.

If you’re editing on a blue-tinted office monitor, your work will look off on every other device.

If you edit on a calibrated professional monitor, your work will look as intended on 90% of devices, and only slightly different on the remaining 10% that are poorly set up.

Black levels

Most standard monitors will struggle with displaying “crushing” blacks, usually as their contrast ratios aren’t precise and will lump dark grey, charcoal and deep black into one big dark void.

This is disastrous for a video editor. You might think a scene looks perfectly moody and dark, but in reality, there is a distracting piece of gear or a messy cable visible in the shadows that your monitor simply wasn’t high-quality enough to show you. A professional monitor would have allowed you to see all the details in the shadow.

Investing in your eyes

It’s easy to think that all you need is the latest 8k camera gear and lighting, but in reality, the monitor is the only part of this visual capture setup you look at throughout the entire process.

Going from your standard monitor to a colour-accurate one will feel like taking off a pair of tinted sunglasses. It won’t feel as exciting as that new lens you just bought for your camera, but it will make the biggest impact on every frame of video you see and produce. In an industry built on visual impact, seeing the truth is the most powerful advantage you can have.

Stop risking your channel’s revenue and momentum.

RouteNote Licensing ensures that the music you license is protected from Content ID claims, allowing you to focus on what you do best: creating great content.

Click Here to Start Your Claim-Safe Journey Today!

When you’re making micro-adjustments to skin tones of a subject, or the subtle shadows in a dark interior, you’re only making these decisions based upon a “guess” if you’re using a standard office or gaming monitor.
