Royalty Free:

Royalty free can be simplified down to “free of royalty”. This basically means that whenever the sound (this also applies to music) is used, a royalty does not need to be paid to the original creator. Instead, you can pay once for the rights to use the recording, and it is yours to use in perpetuity. So, regarding RouteNote Licensing SFX, your subscription payment covers all the effects on the platform. For just $7.99 per month or $59.99 annually you get access to tonnes of SFX to use for your video projects, and they’re yours to keep. We think that’s a pretty sweet deal!

Creative Commons:

Creative commons actually covers a number of different licenses. In general, it means that the recordings are free to use. The SFX on RouteNote Licensing are under the creative commons zero (CC0) license. The original creator has given over the asset for public use with no copyright protection. This gives you complete freedom over how you use the effect.


The difference between royalty free and CC0 SFX on RouteNote Licensing is the subscription. If you choose to subscribe to the platform you will have access to all the SFX on the site! However, if you’d rather hold off on a subscription you can still sign up and take advantage of all the free CC0 effects. You can’t say we’re not good to you!

However, not everyone has the time or resources to create their own SFX. This is where you come in! RouteNote Licensing is now offering both royalty free and creative commons SFX for users to download and use alongside their various projects. We have kicked things off with a batch of great SFX, but we want to give you the chance to share yours with the world. We’re all about community and sharing here, so why not become a contributor? Here’s what is needed to do just that. Becoming a RouteNote Licensing contributor is super straightforward and only requires a few quick details. Once you have signed up to the site you can head to the Creators Apply Page under the Account tab. All we need from you is a link to your portfolio of assets. At the moment, this is just SFX, but soon we will be looking for amazing photos and videos too. Your portfolio might simply be a link to your SFX on SoundCloud, for example. If you have social media account dedicated to your work, we would love to see these as well. It’s always cool to know where contributions are coming from. However, if you don’t have any social media accounts, or if you just want to support your application, leave a comment. If we need anything further from you, we will get in touch with a quick email. And it’s that simple! Once you’ve sent your application request we aim to respond within 24 – 72 hours.

Once you’ve applied to be a creator and uploaded your SFX, all you need to do is wait for them to be approved. This should take between just 24 – 72 hours. Following approval, your SFX will appear under the Approved Sound Effects tab on your Creators Admin dashboard.

Are you a budding Foley artist or someone who has a collection of cool sounds you’ve recorded? There are loads of creators out there who would love to use your sound effects! Creating your own sound effects can be great fun, but for many the time and resources required simply make it unfeasible. RouteNote Licensing is excited to now be a platform for sound effects, alongside fantastic royalty free music. Let us walk you through the straightforward process of applying as a creator. First thing’s first, you’ll need to sign up to the site. Once you have done this, hover over Account in the top right of the page. From the drop down menu, select Creators Apply Page. You will then be directed to the above page. Here you will need to add any links to your portfolio of SFX online for us to have a quick check over. Along with this, you will need to add any links to your relevant social media accounts. Don’t panic if you don’t have any dedicated social media accounts though, we can always send you a quick email if we feel it’s necessary. This is just to touch base and get a bit more background information regarding where the SFX are coming from. Once you’ve filled this out, simply hit Request A Creator Account. And that’s it! All you need to do is wait to be approved, which should take 24 – 72 hours. As soon as your request has been approved you can get going with uploading your SFX to the site.

Are you a budding Foley artist or someone who has a collection of cool sounds you’ve recorded? There are loads of creators out there who would love to use your sound effects! Creating your own sound effects can be great fun, but for many the time and resources required simply make it unfeasible. RouteNote Licensing is excited to now be a platform for sound effects, alongside fantastic royalty free music. And we’re inviting you to share your effects with the world, and they couldn’t be simpler to upload.

To begin uploading your SFX to RouteNote Licensing, simply log into your account. Once you have done this, you will be able to hover over Account in the top right of the page. From the dropdown menu, head to Creators Admin.

You will then be directed to the Creators Admin page, where you will see four tabs. The first tab will automatically be open, and this is the one you need to use to upload, Add Sound Effect.

Here, you will be able to give your SFX its title – we recommend distinctive and descriptive titles, but don’t worry too much as you can add tags to make your effects searchable. Next, you will need to add a category. There are plenty of set categories to choose from, either by searching manually or choosing from a display of all of them. Once you have done this, the field for adding tags will appear. You can add as many as you like, but the more you add, the more searchable your effect will be.

After you’ve added your tags, you can choose whether you would like your effect to be CC0 (Creative Commons) or Subscription based (Royalty Free). If you’re unfamiliar with these terms, check out our handy article! Choosing from the dropdown menu, you can also state if your effect is repeatable, or loop-able. And finally, upload your SFX file by dragging and dropping or uploading from your machine. We recommend uploading WAV files, however MP3 is absolutely fine too.

Once you have added your effect, you will be notified in the top right of the screen that is has been successfully uploaded. It should then appear under your Waiting Sound Effects tab for approval by admin.

So, now you’ve uploaded your SFX, they can be used in all kinds of projects. From YouTube videos, to TikTok, to independent films. Pretty exciting stuff, right? Who knows, you might even be sitting on the next Wilhelm Scream!
