YouTube has a viewer-side feature called Stable volume. According to YouTube Help, it is on by default for many videos and balances the range between quieter and louder parts during playback. The feature is not available for every video, and YouTube says it is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos.

For creators, the useful distinction is that playback processing happens on the viewer’s device or app experience. It does not replace a careful mix in your editor, and the help page does not establish a single loudness target that every creator should use.

What Stable volume can mean for a video

If your video alternates between a quiet voiceover and a loud sound effect, playback balancing may affect how that difference is heard for some viewers. The goal described by YouTube is to reduce variations between quiet and loud sections. The exact listening experience can still depend on the video, device, settings and whether the feature is available.

This is one reason to avoid relying on a last-minute volume boost to solve an uneven mix. Set speech, music and effects deliberately in the project. Keep important dialogue clear, check transitions, and make sure sudden effects do not become uncomfortable.

What creators should do

Listen to your export at a normal level on more than one device. Check the opening, quiet passages, loud moments and transitions between speech and music. If you publish frequently, use a consistent workflow so a viewer does not have to keep changing their volume from video to video.

Avoid treating a third-party loudness number as a guarantee of how YouTube will play the video. Platform behaviour can change, and playback features are not necessarily available to every viewer. Refer to YouTube’s current help pages and test your upload in the actual viewing environment when audio is important to the content.

For music under speech, start with an arrangement that leaves room for the voice, then adjust levels or use ducking where it suits the scene. Check the licence terms for the music and the platforms where you plan to publish.
