One stop is a way to describe a doubling or halving of light in an exposure change. Canon’s cinema exposure guide describes a stop as a doubling or halving of light. Moving one stop brighter means twice as much exposure; one stop darker means half as much.

The term is useful because aperture, shutter speed and ISO can all be adjusted in stop increments. Each control affects the image differently, so the same exposure change does not create the same motion, depth-of-field or noise characteristics.

The doubling-and-halving rule

Imagine a scene is correctly exposed at a chosen setting. If you open the aperture by one stop, you let in twice as much light through the lens. To keep the same overall exposure, you could compensate with another setting, depending on the camera and your creative priorities.

Exposure is not simply “make the meter read zero.” A bright sky, a face in shadow or a reflective object may need to be rendered intentionally brighter or darker than the camera’s automatic suggestion. Canon’s guide discusses how exposure mode helps allocate the recorded tonal range; the right choice depends on the scene and your intended look.

Exposure controls

Aperture changes the lens opening and affects depth of field. Shutter speed changes how long light reaches the sensor and affects motion blur. ISO changes the camera’s signal sensitivity and can affect image noise or highlight handling. Some cameras let you adjust these in full or partial auto modes; controls vary by model.

Use stops on a shoot

When lighting a scene, make small, deliberate adjustments and review the result on the camera’s display or a calibrated monitor where available. Protect important highlights and check the shadows. For video, keep shutter settings consistent with your desired motion rendering and use aperture, lighting or neutral-density filtration to manage exposure when needed.

Consult your camera’s manual for the actual control increments and video-mode limits. A stop is a measurement tool, not a promise that every camera setting behaves identically.
