You’ve spent a great deal of time. hours, maybe even weeks, perfecting your latest video project. You finally hit that upload button, but instead of a sense of relief, a familiar knot hits your stomach. Did I miss something? Are there any mistakes? Why hasn’t it reached 100 views yet?

Instead of obsessively refreshing analytics and sending yourself spiralling into a frenzy of post-upload anxiety, which is a common phenomenon for creators, let’s figure out why it happens along with some strategies to overcome it.

Why does it happen?

When you press upload, your role changes. You go from being in Creator mode (active, creative, in control) to Audience mode (passive, critical, vulnerable). This shift is stark, as you’ve just placed a piece of your creative identity out into the public sphere, and the sudden silence in the first few minutes and hours can feel like judgment and rejection.

The 24 hour rule

2 hours after upload is the most dangerous time for mental health. The algorithm during this time hasn’t even had a chance to find your audience, yet you’re still sitting refreshing your analytics.

  • The strategy: Once your video is live, close your computer and don’t access the Studio app. Go for a walk, cook a meal, or head to the gym. Give that algorithm a good 24 hours of work time before looking at any numbers.

Schedule analytics check-ins

Sitting at your screen, refreshing every few minutes, doesn’t affect how well your video performs; it only makes your stress level go up. Instead, schedule your analytics time like you would a meeting. Twice daily for 10 minutes would be plenty, maybe at the beginning and end of play each day. Use this time to respond to comments and check performance. Outside of those windows, the Studio app is off-limits.

Move onto the next one

A good way to cure the anxiety over your last project is to get excited about the next one. Successful creators often describe their favourite projects as “the next one”.

When you hit the upload button, start a fresh new folder for your new video. Maybe open RouteNote Licensing to browse for new music for the next project, or start gathering ideas with our ideation engine. Shifting your focus back to the creation process can remind your brain that your value isn’t tied to a single upload, but the ongoing string of projects you work on.

Reframing success

Instead of focusing on vanity metrics like total view count, look at metrics like audience retention. Focusing on metrics that give you actionable insights can help to stop the feeling of ‘second-guessing’ yourself and will set you up for future wins.

Remember, your worth isn’t defined by an algorithm that is still “learning” who your audience is. Acknowledge that the anxiety you’re feeling just reflects that you care deeply about your work, take a deep breath, do something different for a while and most importantly, remember: the world is waiting for what you make next.
