How do I set up a YouTube Channel?
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of creating a YouTube channel from start to finish. Whether you want to become a content creator, promote your business or simply share your passion with the world, you can have your channel set up and ready to publish your first video in just a few minutes.
What’s the difference between a YouTube account and a YouTube channel?
Anyone with a Google Account automatically has access to YouTube. This is your viewer account, which allows you to watch videos, subscribe to channels, leave comments and create playlists.
However, a viewer account doesn’t allow you to upload videos. To publish content, you’ll first need to create your own YouTube channel.
A YouTube channel gives you access to YouTube Studio, where you can upload videos, create Shorts, livestream, manage your content, build a subscriber base and customise your public profile. Your channel is linked to your Google Account, so there’s no need to create a separate login.
For this guide, we’ll create a fictional channel called Mylife4U.
Let’s get started!
Step 1: Set up a google account
If you don’t already have one, the first step is to create a Google Account. As Google owns YouTube, the two platforms are closely connected. If you already have a Google Account, you can skip ahead to Step 2.
- Go to google.com and select Create account.

2. Enter your basic information and click Next.

Next, you’ll be asked to create your Gmail address. As Gmail is the world’s most popular email service, many email addresses are already taken, so you may need to try a few variations before finding one that’s available.
Once you’ve chosen an available address, click Next and create a strong password using a combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols.

Before your account can be created, Google will ask you to verify your identity. The exact method may vary, but you’ll usually be asked to verify using your mobile phone by entering a code or following the on-screen instructions. For example when setting up this account in the UK I was asked to use this QR code and follow the verification process.

Next, you’ll be prompted to add a recovery email address. This is highly recommended, as it can help you regain access to your account if you ever forget your password or lose access.

Finally, you’ll be asked to review a few account settings, agree to Google’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and choose your cookie preferences.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your Google Account is ready to use. Clicking your profile icon in the top-right corner should display the following menu.

Step 2: Creating your YouTube channel
Now it’s time to create your YouTube channel.
Make sure you’re signed into your Google Account. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner (it will usually display your initials), then select Create a channel.

You’ll now be asked to name your channel.
For this example I have entered Mylife4U into the Channel Name field.
Your channel name doesn’t have to be unique, although choosing something distinctive will help people find you more easily. Your channel handle, however, must be unique. YouTube will automatically suggest one, but you’re free to edit it. If your chosen handle isn’t available, simply keep trying alternatives until you find one that is.

Next, it’s time to choose your profile picture (also known as your avatar).
Click Select a picture. You’ll have the option of choosing one of YouTube’s built-in illustrations or uploading your own image.

For a more personal and professional look, we recommend uploading your own image.
Click From computer, then either browse for your image or drag it into the upload window. Once uploaded, you can crop and rotate it before clicking Done.
Remember that your profile picture is displayed inside a circle, so make sure important parts of your image aren’t cropped out.

You’ll now see a preview of how your channel will appear. If everything looks good, click Create channel.

Congratulations! Your YouTube channel has now been created.
Before uploading your first video, it’s worth spending a few minutes customising your channel to give visitors a great first impression.
Step 3: Customising your channel
From your new channel homepage, click Customise channel.

You’ll be taken to your channel dashboard. Click Customise to begin editing your channel.

You’ll now see a range of customisation options.

Add a channel banner
The first and arguably most important option is your channel banner.
Click Change to upload one.
Your banner should be at least 2048 × 1152 pixels and no larger than 6 MB.
This is one of the first things visitors will see, so choose an image that reflects your brand and the type of content you plan to create.

You’ll then see a preview showing how your banner appears across desktop, mobile devices and televisions.
Keep important text and logos within the centre safe area so they’re visible on every device.

Edit your channel details
Below the banner settings, you can edit your:
- Profile picture
- Channel name
- Channel handle
You also have the option to add your preferred pronouns. Choose your language, begin typing your preferred pronouns, then select one from the suggestions. Finally, choose whether they’re visible to everyone or subscribers only.

Write your channel description
One of the most important sections is your channel description.
Click inside the text box and write a short description explaining what viewers can expect from your content.
Some creators write a brief one-sentence introduction, while others use much of the available 1,000-character limit to describe their channel in detail.
You can also add translations if you produce content in multiple languages.

Add links
Next, after the Channel URL, you can add links to your website, social media profiles or online store.
Click Add link, enter a title and paste in the URL.
You can add as many links as you need.

Contact address
Below this, you can add a contact email address where viewers or potential business partners can reach you.

Add a video watermark
The final customisation option is your video watermark.
This small graphic appears in the bottom-right corner of your videos and can encourage viewers to subscribe.
Click Upload, then browse for your watermark image.
For the best results, your watermark should have:
- Image dimensions of 150 × 150 pixels
- A 1:1 square aspect ratio
- A simple, uncluttered design
- A PNG file with a transparent background (recommended)
Once you’ve selected your image, click Open.

You’ll now see a preview of your watermark, along with options to choose when it appears.
You can display it:
- Throughout the entire video
- At a custom start time
- During the end of the video only
Choose your preferred option and save your changes.

Congratulations!
Your YouTube channel is now live, fully customised and ready for your first upload.
