What Does a Perpetual Music Licence Mean?

A perpetual music licence generally refers to permission that continues indefinitely for the use described in the licence. But the word “perpetual” doesn’t tell you everything. You still need to check what project, platforms and uses are allowed.

Duration is only one part of the licence

A licence can describe how long a permitted use lasts and what that use includes. Those are different questions. A licence might cover a particular video indefinitely, while still limiting other uses, such as putting the track into a different project or distributing the audio by itself.

Read the terms that apply to the track you downloaded. Look for details on platforms, commercial use, client work, territories, edits and reuse.

Don’t confuse a project with a track file

Having a copy of a song doesn’t mean you can use it in any project. The licence is permission for a defined use. Save the document so you can identify what it covers later.

If you make a second video, a paid ad or a new client version, check whether that is part of the permitted use or needs separate permission.

Check what happens when a subscription changes

Some services connect ongoing use to an active subscription, while others describe licences that continue for a specific project after the subscription ends. Details differ by provider and plan. Don’t rely on another company’s explanation when deciding what applies to your own download.

Check the current terms for the relevant plan and the track. If a clause is unclear, ask the provider before using the music in a high-value or client project.

Keep proof with your files

Save the licence, track name, download date and the project where you used it. For client work, note who has the record and what the final deliverable includes. Good record-keeping can make future edits easier and help answer questions about the audio.

Read the exact terms

“Perpetual” is useful only when read alongside the rest of the licence. Confirm the intended use, project scope and any restrictions before publishing.
