Sony announced the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system on 14 October 2026. Sony UK lists the kit for November 2026 at £350. That means creators can compare the confirmed specifications now, but the microphone is not listed as available to buy yet. Sony’s announcement

What Sony has confirmed

The ECM-W5 package pairs two transmitters with one receiver. Sony says the system can record 96 kHz high-resolution audio and 32-bit float audio directly to a compatible camera through Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe. Each transmitter also has up to 64 GB of internal memory for a backup recording. The kit includes a USB-C adapter for connection to compatible smartphones and computers. Sony also lists the receiver (ECM-W5R) and transmitter (ECM-W5T) as separate products, with November availability and UK prices of £180 and £110 respectively. Check Sony’s specification page for supported devices and connection details before planning a camera or phone setup.

What this could mean for a creator workflow

Two transmitters in one kit may suit a two-person interview, a presenter with a guest, or a small crew capturing separate voices. Internal backup recording can give a production another copy of the audio to check during editing. The direct-to-camera 32-bit float workflow may also reduce how much gain planning is needed for supported setups, but it does not remove the need to monitor the recording or check that the full signal chain and editing software support the format.

Those are workflow implications from Sony’s published features, not independent test results. Sony’s stated range and recording specifications should not be read as a guarantee for every location, device or radio environment.

Check compatibility and availability before deciding

Before ordering, verify your camera’s Multi Interface Shoe support, whether you need the included USB-C adapter, and whether your editing software can import the files you plan to record. If you need a microphone for a shoot before November, this announcement does not confirm that the ECM-W5 will be available in time.

For a reliable production, test the mic with your camera or phone, record a short sample in the location you will use, and listen back on headphones. A wireless system is only one part of an audio setup: room noise, placement and monitoring still matter.

After the dialogue is in place, music and sound effects can help shape the final edit. If you use a licensed track, keep its license record with the project and check that the current license covers your production and the platforms where you plan to publish it. Explore RouteNote Licensing and read the current license agreement before use.
